State lawmakers have had a busy summer, and their work is not done yet. Governor Greg Abbott has called them back to Austin for a third special session. Texas lawmakers will consider whether state or local governments can mandate COVID-19 vaccines during the new session which begins later this month. Governor Abbott's decision to include the issue on the agenda is consistent with his orders restricting pandemic safety measures such as mask mandates in schools. Representative Lambert says he'd like to see local officials make decisions about responding to the ongoing pandemic that will work best for their citizens. He also looks forward to the redistricting process and doling out federal pandemic funds when he returns to his desk at the state capitol on September 2o.

Early voting for May 7th’s general election will begin on Monday, April 25th. Voters will have the opportunity to choose among three candidates for Place 6 on the Abilene City Council. Charles Byrn is one of two candidates taking on Travis Craver. Craver won the open seat in 2019. Burn came in second and is making a second run for the seat. Byrn describes how he would represent the citizens of Abilene on issues of economic development, infrastructure, and the question of Abilene becoming a Sanctuary City for the Unborn.

The United Kingdom successfully tested its newest laser weapon against aerial targets.
UK officials announced on a government website earlier this month that it had achieved the very first “high-power firing” of its DragonFire laser-directed energy weapon (LDEW) system. Scientists tested the new weapon at the Hebrides Range off Scotland’s coast.

The FDA announced Friday that it had approved two gene therapies based on CRISPR technology for sickle cell disease, the first cell-based treatments for the disease.
The gene-based therapies, Casgevy and Lyfgenia, are for use in patients 12 years old and older. Both of these therapies are produced by using a patient’s own stem cells.
Casgevy is manufactured by Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc., while Lyfgenia is manufactured by Bluebird Bio Inc.
